As more details surface surrounding the horrific tragedy at a Filipino festival in Vancouver, the community in Hamilton worries about their own safety. Eleven people were killed and dozens of others injured after a man drove an SUV through a crowd at a local Lapu Lapu street festival in Vancouver Saturday night. The first victim to be identified from the weekend tragedy is Kira Salim, a valued middle and high school teacher and counsellor.

Defence lawyer Scott Reid says the prosecution has not proven that Brandi Stewart-Sperry knew that the man accused of killing Const. Greg Pierzchala had a gun or what he intended to do on the day of the fatal shooting. Reid says if she didn’t know, then she’s not guilty of murder. Pierzchala was 28 years old and had just passed probation as an OPP Constable when he was shot and killed on a road near Hagersville in December 2022 while responding to a car in a ditch.

Officials at the Vatican are providing more information about the death of Pope Francis on Sunday, saying he passed away peacefully and did not suffer. Around the world today, people were preparing for the Pope’s funeral and the process of choosing a new pontiff for the Roman Catholic Church. With the body of Pope Francis placed in a simple wooden coffin in the chapel of his residence, cardinals of the church were meeting to plan his funeral. In this country, Canadians were honouring Pope Francis.
