Kaitlyn Casimo loves her job. Every day is different, she says, and she draws on her varied background to tackle her work as education and engagement manager at the Allen Institute. Armed with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, certificates in computational neuroscience and neural engineering, an M.Ed. in instructional design and experience directing plays, Casimo oversees a team of six people to organize dozens of outreach events and activities at the institute each year.

Grace Lindsay is assistant professor of psychology and data science at New York University in New York City. Her lab studies the brain by using artificial neural networks as models of biological information processing. She also works separately on applications of machine learning to climate change problems. Lindsay is also the author of “Models of the Mind: How Physics, Engineering and Mathematics Have Shaped Our Understanding of the Brain,” published in 2021.

Joshua Sanes is professor of molecular and cellular biology and founding director of the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University. He and his colleagues study the formation of synapses. They have also pioneered new ways to mark and manipulate neurons and the synapses they form. For the past 20 years, Sanes and his team have focused on the retina, in which specific patterns of connections form the complex circuits that underlie the initial steps in visual perception.
