The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation and the Johannesburg Crisis Alliance have welcomed the news that the Johannesburg Library will be partly reopened on Friday. “It is appropriate that this is taking place on Human Rights Day, as access to information is a fundamental human right as enshrined in our constitution,” the organisations said in a joint statement. They said they were eagerly awaiting the full reopening of the library in central Johannesburg towards the middle of the year.

A self-employed father who won R8.4m in the Lotto Plus 1 jackpot in last Wednesday's draw plans to buy a car and grow his business. Ithuba confirmed the winner, who bought his ticket on a banking app with a R10 wager using the Quick Pick method to select his numbers, has come forward to claim his winnings. The man said the moment he learnt he had won, he offered a prayer of thanks. “I've never won such a large amount of money. I'm very excited to better my life and that of my family,” he said.

A resident of Rustenburg in the North West who bagged R5.2m in the Lotto Plus 2 jackpot plans to donate some of her winnings to her church. “I'm an avid churchgoer and as part of my way of giving back to the community I will donate some of my winnings to my church. I'm grateful for this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those around me,” she said. Her win came from a R40 wager purchased in Rustenburg for last Wednesday's draw.

Wounded South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who required urgent medical care have been repatriated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to receive high-level medical care. Scores of SANDF soldiers were wounded in clashes between the M23 rebel forces and DRC government troops earlier this month, with some suffering severe wounds including a leg amputation and head wounds. Some sustained multiple wounds to limbs and head.
