Billy Kay said it was an honour to have been invited to give a talk at the newly refurbished John O’Groats Mill. The well-known writer and broadcaster, a passionate advocate for the Scots language, declared that he’d had a “braw nicht” at the opening event of the 2025 John O’Groats Book Festival. An Evening with Billy Kay came less than a month after the historic mill was reopened as a heritage attraction and community venue following a £4.9 million project led by John O’Groats Mill Trust.

Historic Environment Scotland has been accused of “turning a blind eye” to proposals for a major battery energy storage scheme near the Castle of Mey. Local resident Andy Hayton criticised the Edinburgh-based body for failing to do enough to protect the “treasured national landmark” which is one of the far north’s top tourist attractions.

Euan Kennedy is confident that Wick Academy can achieve a top-half finish in the Highland League if they continue where they left off at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The highly rated young forward spent the second half of the season on loan with the Scorries and has now signed a long-term deal with the club after spending five years in the Ross County youth set-up. Highland League champions Brora Rangers made a late approach but Kennedy kept his commitment to Wick.

Staff from Rolls-Royce at Vulcan did their bit for the environment when they took part in a Clean Up Your Caithness community event. Employees were encouraged to finish work early and spent an afternoon collecting litter in a location of their choice. A wide area was covered, with litter picked up in Wick, Thurso, Castletown, Scrabster, Dunnet, Halkirk, Reiss and Westfield, resulting in a noticeable improvement.
