Caithness United under-14s brought the curtain down on their 2024/25 season with a 4-2 victory over Orkney Youth Development Group in blustery conditions at Naver. It was played as the inaugural match for the Dan Thomson Memorial Cup, donated by Ken Green in memory of the former Wick Rovers manager. With many of the players’ families looking on, the prolific Ruaridh Kean grabbed two goals to take his season’s tally to 32.

Wick Groats have been given the go-ahead to play their delayed Highland Amateur Cup second-round game against CK Interiors from the Inverness and district first division. Some of the appeals that were lodged over earlier ties have been concluded, allowing Groats’ match to go ahead in Wick on Saturday, June 14. The winners will be at home to last year’s beaten finalists, Avoch, on June 21. Wick Groats have won four of the last 10 Highland Amateur Cup finals.

Caithness campaigners have underlined their message that “far too many mums-to-be have to travel to Raigmore” after figures were released showing the limited number of Wick births over the past decade. Since the consultant-led maternity unit was downgraded in 2016 to a midwife-led facility, an average of about 18 births have been recorded each year at Caithness General Hospital. The vast majority of expectant mothers from the far north go to Inverness.

A Kuk Sool Won revival is under way in Wick, led by an instructor who has been studying the traditional Korean martial art since the age of eight. Katherine Nicolson (25), a third degree black belt, is running weekly sessions and is keen to encourage children and adults to give it a try. “Kuk Sool is based more around self-defence rather than attack,” she explained.

GOAL Academy and BGK Goalkeeping Academy will be bringing a football and goalkeeper camp to Wick this summer in partnership with East End FC. The camp will run daily from July 14-18, between 9am and 3pm, with full-day and half-day options available, using the Wick-based youth football club’s facilities at Bignold Park. The camp is open to boys and girls of all abilities and positions, aged six to 16.
