At the recent Livermore candidates’ forum, Jeff Kaskey and Tom Soules reiterated their unrealistic desire to move Eden Housing to north of Railroad Ave. Kaskey also erroneously stated that there are abandoned buildings in that area.

I’ve known Steven for several years through our interactions on City committees, and I learned much more about his positions and the way he makes decisions during a recent 1.5-hour meeting with him. We covered issues ranging from the dysfunctional bollards on East Avenue to establishing a permanent greenbelt north and east of the City. He is a very knowledgeable and pragmatic person who can think at a strategic level but also understands the detailed issues facing City staff.

Susan Mayall asks in a recent letter why not build high-rise housing. It is a valid, important question. That said, her description of the new Legacy apartments as squat is ironic given the vociferous criticism of the project by some as being too high for Livermore – they said it should have been three stories. Regardless, it is important in the days of high housing prices to address the question of whether building taller apartments or condominiums would increase or decrease housing unit costs.
