    2 Girlguiding volunteers – Julia Downer and Rosemary Walls – attended a surprise party to celebrate their 120 combined years of service on the Isle of Wight. They were presented with 60 Years Brooches by Chris Thornton from Girlguiding SW England Region. Linda Stone, Island Commissioner, presented gifts and cards. Julia and Rosemary joined Girlguiding as Brownies with the 8th Ryde (Methodist) unit and later became Guides and Sea Rangers.

    Girlguiding IW has been selected by Isle of Wight Festival organisers to receive a pair of weekend festival tickets, which are now up for grabs in a silent auction. Payment offered will raise much-needed funds for this local charity which supports over 500 girls and young women across the Island, and give local girls the chance to undertake more adventures.

    With a career spanning decades and a catalogue of hits, Welsh rock band Stereophonics are ready to bring their signature sound back to Seaclose next month. Welsh rock band, Stereophonics, previously graced the Seaclose Park stage in 2004, 2009 and 2016. Their hit singles include ‘The Bartender and The Thief’, ‘Mama Told Me Not To Come’ (with Tom Jones), ‘Mr Writer’, ‘Handbags and Gladrags’, ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ and their sole number one ‘Dakota’, in  2005. In total, they have 10 top 10 singles.

    Newport Pantry, based within Newport Congregational Church, recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary. Susie Sheldon, Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, and High Sheriff Jacque Gazzard were special guests. Held weekly, the Newport Pantry is run by manager Leanne and her assistant Zoe, with help from 10 regular volunteers. Around 10,000 transactions have taken place over the 2 years.

    Music legend Sting, famed for his work with The Police and an award-winning solo career, will headline the Isle of Wight Festival next month. Sting, real name Gordon Sumner, was born in Newcastle back in 1951. His nickname came from the fact that he used to wear a black and yellow sweater during his early days as a musician. Bass player and singer-songwriter Sting’s solo career has surpassed his success as a member of that group.
