Sunlight streams through wide picture windows that look out across lavender hedges and lawns to a flowering cherry tree planted by Diana, Princess of Wales, and on to a rambling native garden that was planted by then-Prime Minister John Gorton’s wife, Bettina, back in 1968. Ghosts are everywhere here at The Lodge, the official Canberra residence of Prime Ministers since 1927.

Denise Scott attended the 2024 TV Week Logie Awards on August 18, 2024 – a full year after she first publicly revealed that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. The Weekly spoke to Denise on the Logies red carpet and asked how she’s doing. “I am doing very well. The term 'secondary dwelling' doesn't exactly elicit excitement, but this 49-square-metre build is anything but boring. Designed to fulfil many functions – pool house, home office, guest room, party pad – it's fully self-contained with a vibrant blue-hued bathroom, compact kitchen and fold-down bed. With full-width sliding doors opening to a paved area and steps up to a lush garden and pool, it feels light years away from a poky granny flat.

"We called this house a diamond in the rough when we bought it," says its owner and designer, Kerrie Sparks of Designer Sparks Interiors. "It was in reasonable condition but not to the standard we envisaged." Thick tufts of couch grass poke through cracks in the floor, plaster peels away in sheets from the walls and a menacing dark brown stain creeps across the ceiling of Andy Lee and Bec Harding’s dream home. “As you can see, she needs a bit of work … the house … not Bec!” Andy quips of the derelict property on the banks of Melbourne’s Yarra River. It was once described by a real estate agent as “something out of a horror film”.

There's nothing quite like planning a wedding at a property to kickstart the renovations. Such was the case with this historic Federation cottage on the Hawkesbury River that became a dream project for owners Kendall Bora and Matt Doran. Having discovered the area and fallen in love with it in 2021 the couple searched the length of the river for a suitable house to buy. Matt found "the one" while Kendall was overseas for work and put in an offer, even though it wasn't on the market.
