AbstractThe nervous system scales with animal size while preserving function, yet the principles underlying this stability remain unclear. Here, we analyse the ultrastructure and connectivity of thousands of neuronal cells across species, including fly, zebrafish, mouse, and human, and found a conserved feature that stabilises neuronal responses across scales: an average of one synapse per micrometre of dendritic cable.

AbstractMetazoans detect and differentiate between innocuous (non-painful) and/or noxious (harmful) environmental cues using primary sensory neurons, which serve as the first node in a neural network that computes stimulus specific behaviors to either navigate away from injury-causing conditions or to perform protective behaviors that mitigate extensive injury.

AbstractThe nervous system scales with animal size, maintaining function. However, it is unknown how variations in neuronal size are compensated to preserve excitability. Here, we measured neuronal cell structure and connectivity from fly and zebrafish to mouse and human and discovered an invariant feature that stabilizes neuronal responses: an average of one synapse for every micrometer of dendritic cable.
