In the 2024 election, Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris by sweeping all seven swing states. He won the popular vote as well, but by a relatively slim margin. When all the votes are counted (get it together California!) his margin is predicted to be only 1.5 points. For months the polls told us we were in a very close election and that’s exactly what we got. Now comes the time when we all attempt to decipher what voters were communicating about their interests.

Key Points Partisans are split on whether men or women have it easier in American society today, with 68 percent of Democrats believing men have it easier and only 32 percent of Republicans believing the same. While only 35 percent of Americans say the label “feminist” describes them well, 55 percent of young women and only 31 percent of young men identify as feminists. Young women are 12 percentage points more likely than young men to support Kamala Harris in 2024 (57 percent vs. 45 percent).

The groundswell of support from young people, NPR correspondent Tamara Keith recently said, indicates "the kind of enthusiasm they haven't experienced since Obama." The marriage gap has long been a feature of American politics. Since at least the 1990s, married Americans—both men and women—have voted more consistently for Republican candidates than single Americans have. In 2024, we found that 48 percent of married voters were supporting Trump compared to 34 percent who had never been married, a 14-point gap. There is another gap that caught my attention recently.
