In the face of the relentless ratcheting up of the Trump administration’s economic assault on Canada, we’ve seen basically three types of government responses: almost immediate and very specific retaliatory tariffs, long-term and somewhat diffuse pledges to bolster Canada’s internal economy (i.e., maybe an east-west pipeline, ending inter-provincial trade barriers) and localized gestures that feel more demonstrative than substantial.

It’s a good time to re-think our imports from the U.S., but not just because of tariffs. We can certainly do without the tactics increasingly common in politics and exploited by Donald Trump: bullying adversaries; making outrageous claims; scapegoating the vulnerable; dismissing research as fake news, and using the courts to intimidate rivals.

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning in High Park, cyclists are lapping the loop while families stroll along the winding sidewalks. There isn’t a car in sight, but not everyone is happy about that. Since weekend car access was banned in 2020, “High Park Access for All” protestors have argued that cars are essential for accessibility. While seemingly well-intentioned, these claims misuse accessibility language to divide transit and disability advocates, aiming to restore a car-centric status quo.
