We need a similar re-calibration of Canada’s housing system to address our deepening affordability problem. Housing is foundational for a strong Canada, and we must focus on housing that is more affordable, cost-effective to construct, energy efficient and climate resilient. We can start by growing Canada’s non-profit housing sector.

    It’s a beautiful Sunday morning in High Park, cyclists are lapping the loop while families stroll along the winding sidewalks. There isn’t a car in sight, but not everyone is happy about that. Since weekend car access was banned in 2020, “High Park Access for All” protestors have argued that cars are essential for accessibility. While seemingly well-intentioned, these claims misuse accessibility language to divide transit and disability advocates, aiming to restore a car-centric status quo.

    During the week of December 2, 2023, the City of Toronto removed a TTC transit shelter at Dundas Street East and Sherbourne Street, in Moss Park. The removal, carried out by the street furniture division, was made at the direction of Toronto-Centre councillor Chris Moise. Lorraine Lam, a local outreach worker, arrived just in time to bear witness. She watched as a truck with a crane parked nearby.
