Fall can be bittersweet. In Wisconsin, we celebrate the abundance of local farms and our home gardens, but we also wave goodbye to warm weather, wildlife and the verdant landscape. It’s a good time to take extra care and lean into activities that bring us rest and reflection, like stretching your legs, reading a book, baking a pie or communing with friends and neighbors over the hard-earned fruits of summer. Aldo Leopold’s “Conservation Esthetic” first ran in the March-April 1938 issue of Audubon. The essay later appeared in Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. Barring love and war, few enterprises are undertaken with such abandon, or by such diverse individuals, or with so paradoxical a mixture of appetite and altruism, as that group of avocations known as outdoor recreation. It is, by common consent, a good thing for people to get back to nature.
