Two soldiers sentenced for beating a gunner while on exercise at a US base have failed to convince a court their terms of detention were too excessive. After a court martial at Linton Military Camp, Bombardier Gus Nove and Sergeant Leaongo Tanginoa were each found guilty of assaulting Gunner Nikau Minhinnick Gill in Hawaii in 2023. The pair faced the military panel in February, and Tanginoa was dismissed from service and sentenced to six months in a military prison.

The victim of a shooting outside a Palmerston North bar had his face slashed by a machete before another man fired a bullet into his chest at close range, a court heard this week. The man was taken to hospital after Matiu Hemi-Bateman retrieved a .22 cut down shotgun from his car, parked outside the front doors of The Royal Hotel, and shot him in retaliation for an argument that broke out inside the pub’s gaming room.
