As an under-14s player at Tottenham, according to former youth coach Alex Inglethorpe, he "wasn't even on the podium" when it came to the age-group's top talents. He was still a youth player the last time Spurs won a trophy, the League Cup in 2008, but earned his breakthrough with the first-team squad and signed his first professional deal in July 2010.
