Mary Margaret Cleary (CAS ‘14), a current professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, filed a class action lawsuit against Georgetown University on Oct. 18, citing negligence after a data leak compromised the sensitive personal information of current and former students. The lawsuit alleges Georgetown failed to properly secure and store personally identifiable information (PII), including Social Security numbers and Tax ID numbers.

Thousands rallied in continued support of Ukraine on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the afternoon of Feb. 24, which marks two years since Russia launched its invasion into Ukraine. Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska addressed over 700 students, faculty, and Ukrainian visitors in Gaston Hall during an event hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security (GIWPS) on Sept. 21. As fighting continues 19 months after Russia’s invasion, Zelenska urged the Georgetown audience to remain attentive to Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, announced a donation of Ukrainian books to Georgetown’s library, and was honored by GIWPS.

The Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees (GAGE), which represents the over 1,000 graduate workers at Georgetown, ratified their second successful contract campaign on Aug. 18 with 98.7% approval from members for the collective bargaining agreement. The deal comes after the release of a report in which nearly 82% of graduate student workers claimed their compensation does not meet their financial needs.

News The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention opened in Ward 8 on April 17 thanks to $25 million in grant funding from The Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation. The grant pledged to fund five new cancer centers across the country in historically underserved areas to make healthcare more widely accessible, including in southeast D.C., the first center to open.
