April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and new research at Utah State University finds one in seven Utah children experiences sexual abuse -- higher than the national average of one in nine. The data also find Utah girls experience a higher rate of sexual abuse than boys. Kolene Anderson, associate director of the Utah Women and Leadership Project, suspects those figures are even higher.

Rural Nevada is facing a housing and transportation crisis. Advocates for those with disabilities say things are getting out of hand. Dee Dee Foremaster, director of the Rural Center for Independent Living, said there is not enough available low-income housing, and added the units that are available to folks on the Housing Choice Voucher program, formerly called Section Eight, is "substandard." She added the average Nevadan on Social Security receives almost $1,000 a month.

A bill in the Nevada Legislature would prohibit school districts and staff from banning books without legal justification to brand the material "obscene."Asm. Brittney Miller, D-Las Vegas, the committee chair, sponsored the measure. Conservatives have targeted books containing LGBTQ+ content as well as racial and ethnic experiences, deeming them explicit and not in the best interest of young readers.

Insurance premiums have gone up substantially and according to a new report, Utah is the state where homeowners are being hit the hardest. The Consumer Federation of America's latest report found from 2021 to 2024, annual insurance premiums for a typical Utah homeowner increased by almost $700. Sharon Cornelissen, director of housing for the federation, said skyrocketing premiums and increasing housing costs have presented a real challenge to many Utahns.

Latino media outlets in Arizona are coming together to ensure the Hispanic and Latino communities are informed and educated about their rights amid the current immigration climate. Laura Madrid, CEO of the radio stations "La Onda" 1190 AM and 99.5 FM, said this sort of initiative is not new to Arizona. She recalled a similar campaign after Arizona enacted its controversial 2010 immigration law Senate Bill 1070, which critics said led to racial profiling.
