Oscar held on to tropical storm strength overnight, despite the blow dealt by Cuba’s mountains, as it rolled over the Southeastern Bahamas on Tuesday. The storm is expected to drop about 3 to 5 inches of rain on the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos as it crosses the islands. As of the 8 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said the storm maintained 40 mph sustained winds and was moving northeast at 12 mph, a much faster clip than the night before.

On Friday night, a messy tropical wave to the east of Puerto Rico had just a 10% chance of strengthening over the weekend. By lunchtime on Saturday, it was a Category 1 hurricane bearing down on the Bahamas. Experts said the tiny storm ducked the attention of most major storm models, but humans watching the data pour in — and pilots and researchers gathering it themselves — were able to sound the alarm before Hurricane Oscar made landfall.

Tropical Storm Oscar remained crouched over eastern Cuba, where it could drop more than a foot of rain as it crawls over the island nation at 3 mph. Oscar was a tiny, weak storm, with tropical-storm-force winds extending just 45 miles from the center and maximum sustained winds at 40 mph.
