The Chinese Navy (PLAN) today commissioned the first of two Type 054B new generation frigates in Qingdao, Shandong province. The ceremony represents a major milestone a little over two years after the modules for the first hull were spotted at builder Hudong in Shanghai around December 2022. Hudong had launched the hull in August 2023 and the ship started sea trials one year ago in January 2024.

Anyone wondering what an invasion of Taiwan might look like now has a fresh visual clue. Defence analysts watching Chinese shipyards have noticed an increase in a particular type of vessel. A number of special and unusual barges, at least 3 but likely 5 or more, have been observed in Guangzhou Shipyard in southern China. These have unusually long road bridges extending from their bows.

The event marks a major milestone in a project drawing significant international attention. According to officials statements the new ship will receive the hull number 51 and the name “Sichuan”, after the eponymous province in southwestern China.

The German Parliament (Bundestag) in its final committee sessions before Christmas has approved a large number of Bundeswehr procurement requests worth around 21 billion Euros. The most notable item for the German Navy concerns an additional four Type 212CD submarines. This approval means Berlin will have six Type 212CD on order, once officials sign off on a contract with builder TKMS. Type 212CD represents a collaboration between Germany and Norway modernizing their respective submarine fleets.
