Anyone wondering what an invasion of Taiwan might look like now has a fresh visual clue. Defence analysts watching Chinese shipyards have noticed an increase in a particular type of vessel. A number of special and unusual barges, at least 3 but likely 5 or more, have been observed in Guangzhou Shipyard in southern China. These have unusually long road bridges extending from their bows.

On January 6 Ukrainian Navy (VMS ZSU) USVs used FPV (first person view) drones to destroy 3 Russian air defense systems near Skadovs'k, north of Crimea. The attacks have continued with Russian social media reporting that, on Jan 8 a Ukrainian USVs with an MLRS was also recorded in the vicinity of Pokrovskoe and Pokrovka on the Kinburn Spit. They launched 10 rockets. These USVs were, circumstantially, likely a Sea Baby operated by the SBU.

The fall of the Assad regime in Syria in the final weeks of 2024 continues to reverberate through the Russian political and military system. Russia has lost the use of the naval base at Tartus, which is already affecting its ability to maintain forces in the Mediterranean. The Russian Navy is at its weakest there since before the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Significantly, Russia does not have any submarine in the Mediterranean Sea. The last left on January 2.

The much larger, and better equipped, Russian Navy has been pushed back to its distant port of Novorossiysk. According to the press release, the frigates Admiral Gorshkov and Admiral Golovko (both project 22350), operating as part of a strike group, fired 3M22 Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, while the diesel-electric submarine Novorossiysk (project 06363 Varshavyanka) fired a 3M14 Kalibr cruise missile at a sea target. At the same time, from the Mediterranean coast, the crew of the K300P Bastion coastal missile system conducted a combat launch with a supersonic 3M55 Onyx cruise missile.
