Municipalities in Limpopo owe Eskom about R1.6 billion. The debt dates back to last December, Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, pictured, told mayors, municipal managers, chief financial officers, councillors, directors and premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba during a South African Local Government Association (Salga) indaba at the weekend. The debt to Eskom by municipalities nationwide amounts to a staggering R78 billion.

Residents in Limpopo’s Blouberg municipality say they are forced to compete for dirty water with wild animals. This comes after the government spent a staggering R213 million on bulk water projects that have failed to produce a drop of water for two years. Most of these projects remain incomplete, while others are described as “white elephants”. The projects are funded by the Capricorn district municipality through the municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) and other sources.

Thousands of boys and girls in Limpopo will not be circumcised this year after the Modjadji Royal Council and family asked that no initiation schools (koma schools) be held in the Bolobedu Kingdom. The clan, with more than 1.1 million people from 132 villages, suspended the initiations to respect its tradition ahead of Queen Masalanabo Modjadji’s coronation. The Modjadjis are known for their supposed rainmaking powers. Because of this, Masalanabo is known as the Rain Queen.
