South African filmmaker Godisamang Khunou’s documentary, Black Women and Sex, won the Best Documentary Feature at the recent American Black Film Festival (ABFF). By nature, sex is liberating, but most black women’s experience of the intimate act isn’t of freedom, but instead bondage. Speaking to The Citizen, Khunou said she was inspired to tell the story after meeting a filmmaker from Ghana in 2015 who had done a film about female genital mutilation.

Most South Africans were still mesmerised by the Protea Fire on Sunday, but 17-year-old Pearl Mathebula hoisted the flag as she was crowned Miss Teen International in Peru on the same day. Mathebula, who hails from Makotopong, in Limpopo, took the coveted crown ahead of Perú’s Luciana Henriquez, who was the first runner-up, and Ángela García from Venezuela, who was the second runner-up. Miss Teen International is the brainchild of Marina Mora, its international director and organiser.

Jordan Klopper, from Fourways, has been selected, after the SA Sprint Championships, to represent SA at the World Sprint Championships. What is even more amazing, is the fact that he has been selected five times, which is quite an achievement. “I honestly wasn’t expecting to be selected this year,” said Klopper. “I’ve just moved into a new age group (U23), and with the transition to university life at the University of Cape Town, there were a lot of changes and challenges to navigate.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has conceded that young people in South Africa are not living the future they hoped for. This is amid the high levels of unemployment, inequality, and a lack of access to opportunities, especially in the digital world. “As the government, we acknowledge that, for these young people, their reality remains untenable, undesirable, and unsustainable,” said Mashatile in his Youth Day address in North West.
