DANVILLE — Even though his team wouldn't have been eliminated from contention with a loss Tuesday, Shikellamy coach Jeremy Bauman fully intended for his team to take care of business right then and there. The Shikellamy Junior Baseball All-Stars did just that in a huge way, trouncing West Branch 16-5 in five innings to capture the District 13 title at the heat-scorched Washies Little League Complex. kAm$9:<6==2>J H:== >@G6 @? The past calendar year for Baylee Espinosa can best be described as a rollercoaster ride. Espinosa got sick during the 3,200-meter run in last year’s state meet — she was struggling to breathe and her legs turned purple — and didn’t finish the race as a result. Then during cross-country season in the fall, Espinosa struggled with hip tendonitis, Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and anemia, which ended with a ninth-place finish in the PIAA state championships.

As soon as Gavin Holcombe picked up a pole vault for the first time at a clinic in Williamsport in the seventh grade, he immediately became hooked to it. Holcombe then spent years and years perfecting his craft, which eventually resulted in three state medals for the Danville senior — the last of which being the biggest prize of them all, a gold medal. As the area’s lone boys field gold medalist, Holcombe is The Daily Item Male Field Athlete of the Year.
