Daily Item
The Sunbury Daily, established in 1872, and The Evening Item, which started in 1893, came together on July 1, 1936. The Daily Item was published five afternoons a week and was owned by the Dewart family along with local investors until April 15, 1970, when it was acquired by Ottaway Community Newspapers. Under Ottaway's ownership, the newspaper underwent modernization and improvements. In 1979, they installed new printing presses and later, in the late 1980s, added Saturday and Sunday morning editions. In 2001, the publication expanded further by purchasing The Danville News.
