Governor Kathy Hochul announced a plan to restrict cell phone use in New York schools during her budget address Tuesday. The proposed state budget for fiscal year 2026 includes a $13.5 million line item to create phone-free K-12 schools, a policy Hochul said would “transform our classrooms” while improving student mental health and academic performance.

When it comes to the climate crisis, the youth have spoken — and two Fordham alumni played a major role in giving them a voice. Coco de Marneffe and Ian Muir Smith, both FCLC ’22, were the lead organizers of this year’s Local Conference of Youth (LCOY USA), an annual event that brings together over 125 young people from across the country carefully selected for their leadership in the climate movement.

I hate to say it, but the fall term may be even more disruptive on college campuses than this disastrous past spring. Hostilities between Israel and Hamas could extend beyond the summer and spread to include Hezbollah — or, God forbid, a direct conflict with Iran. That will add fuel to the calls for disclosure and divestment that led to the pro-Palestinian encampments on dozens of campuses.
