    Basic’s baseball team was forced to sit out the playoffs last season. The Wolves were a favorite for the Class 5A state title last year. But their championship dreams ended the last week of the regular season, when the team had to forfeit most of its league games for using an ineligible player. This year, with most of its core back, Basic has taken full advantage of its second chance. The 5A baseball state tournament begins Thursday at UNR’s Peccole Park.

    The rematch between Coronado and Palo Verde’s boys volleyball teams in the Class 5A state championship game didn’t disappoint. After a marathon five sets, the Cougars got their revenge. A year after being swept in the title game, Coronado survived a five-set thriller over Palo Verde 23-25, 25-14, 28-30, 25-20, 15-12 to win the 5A state championship Tuesday night at Sunrise Mountain. “It feels great,” first-year coach Jazlynn Mau said.

    Coronado boys volleyball coach Jazlynn Mau said she expected the Cougars to have a dominant season. While she would have preferred Coronado’s 37-2 record to have “a goose egg at the end” of it, Mau said the blemishes have the Cougars focused and confident to finish their season with a state title. “Since then, we’ve been on a straight and narrow road to success. … We just have one more goal left in our season,” Mau said.

    The Shadow Ridge boys and Centennial girls track and field teams got off to a strong start as they seek to defend their Class 5A state team titles. Shadow Ridge ran away with the 5A boys Southern Region team title Saturday at Durango with 180.5 points. Liberty finished second with 92 points. Centennial claimed the 5A girls Southern Region team title with 123 points. Shadow Ridge was second with 85, and Legacy was third with 80. The 5A state meet is this Friday and Saturday at Desert Oasis.
