So, suffice it to say, I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to join a press cavalcade that has taken Andrew from Paul Wells’ Substack, to the Globe and Mail, and even *gasp* the Toronto Star. I’ve interviewed Andrew before, on the occasion of his terrific first novel, and I’m pleased to be bringing his talents, insights, absurd work ethic, and witticisms back to our audience here.

Company A’s shares are owned by Company B and Company A wants to buy back the shares at the investment value on Company B’s balance sheet. This is planned to be funded through a loan from Company B to A for the value it is buying its shares back for. Once company A owns its own shares again it will sell these shares to new directors. The new directors plan to pay a nominal sum of 40k for the shares. Questions:What are the tax implications for the seller? Will this be under capital gains?

Ottawa is an old city, and no longer in very good shape, nor is the canal that runs through her (where the public is oft no longer allowed to skate for reasons of both El Nino and to protect bureaucratic, ‘climate crisis’ kayfabe), but there are parts of her that are still pretty nice. ‘The Hill’ is beautiful — at least, when it’s not under make-work construction. The Library of Parliament should be a must for most visitors. Little Victories cafe and the Chateau Laurier hold their charms.

It’s the beginning of the holiday season, which means for the majority of Canadians it’s a time to plan, gather, give thanks, forget what ails them, and look towards the promise of a New Year, and a new beginning. After all, even a nation in precipitous decline deserves a breather, and a little (ginger) bread and circus. But for seven million Canadians, that requisite lightness of being won’t come as easy.
