Background Strong relationships between trainees and physician supervisors can positively influence how trainees navigate workplace learning. How trainees act and learn in clinical workplaces characterized by rapidly developing and dissolving supervisory pairings is less well understood. This study uses the emergency department (ED) to examine the impact of transient supervisory relationships on how residents approach clinical learning opportunities.

IntroductionWorldwide, 1–2% of children are born very premature, and these numbers are rising [1, 2]. Very premature birth is associated with postnatal oxygen dependency and the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) [3]. Advances in neonatal care, particularly the introduction of exogenous surfactant administration in the early 1990s, resulted in a clear division between “classic” BPD and “new” BPD [3, 4].

Introduction Recent randomized clinical trials have compared antibiotic regimens of varying intensity for the treatment of pediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).1-4 These trials identified no advantage to high-dose vs low-dose amoxicillin3 or a longer vs shorter duration of antibiotic therapy1-4 with respect to rates or timing of clinical improvement.
