INTRODUCTIONLeucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a multi-functional kinase, has been the subject of intense study since it was discovered that inherited, autosomal dominant mutations that increase its kinase activity also increase the risk for Parkinson’s (PD). Elevated LRRK2 levels or kinase activity, in the absence of mutation, also occur in patients with idiopathic PD (1, 2), suggesting that the enzyme is part of a common disease pathology.
