More students living in the United States are expressing interest in pursuing their post-secondary studies at Canadian universities. Both the universities of Waterloo and Guelph tell CTV News they’ve seen a rise in visitors and applicants coming from south of the border. According to a University of Guelph spokesperson, the school has seen a 31.5 per cent increase in U.S. applicants for fall 2025 compared to the previous year.

A Waterloo Region realtor has come under fire for a heated exchange with a resident in Cambridge on Friday. In a video shared online, broker Jeff Blackham was seen cursing and yelling a homophobic slur at a woman who is out of frame. “There was a video that someone caught that said, ‘Shove it up their wazoo,’ or whatever, and use the nice name for a lesbian that’s not very nice,” said Lisa Di Pasqua. “And that was it.

Firework fanatics in Kitchener may soon have to look elsewhere to buy their explosive pyrotechnics. City staff are recommending a bylaw amendment that would enforce a full ban on firework sales within the city and restrict the length of fireworks displays starting January 2026. Kitchener mayor Berry Vrbanovic told CTV News the amendment came from concerns raised by residents over the last few years.

A clothing boutique in St. Jacobs, Ont. is asking for help to track down a designer gown allegedly stolen off the rack. Staff at La Crème claim two women came in looking for a dress on Monday afternoon and walked out with a thousand-dollar gown hidden in a handbag. “It was a beautiful pink ruffled gown with a high slit and off-the-shoulder sleeves,” said Brittany Burgess, the store’s operations director. “It was just absolutely beautiful.

The unpredictable weather is wreaking havoc on the plans of gardeners looking to get a head start on the season. Waterloo Region has already gotten snow, freezing rain and cooler-than-average temperatures in just the first week of April. “We’ve seen a few warm days and then a few really cold days,” said Rosemary Van Roose, co-owner of Belgian Nursery in Breslau, Ont. With more cold days and nights on the horizon, she advises holding off on planting for now.
