There may be disruptions to school transportation in eastern Ontario this upcoming school year due to a breakdown in contract talks. Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) — a not-for-profit organization that negotiates annual service contracts with school bus companies — says drivers for the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario have rejected its recent offer.

OPP say they have arrested someone following a serious assault of a youth last month in Quinte West. Police say the incident took place in the wooded area near Hanna Park in Trenton on July 8 just before midnight. A youth was stabbed in the hand and “sustained significant lacerations,” OPP said. The youth was sent to hospital to be treated, but OPP did not give an update on their condition. The two parties did not know each other before the assault, police say.

A Kingston farm is missing a baby alpaca, and the owners of Willow Pond Farm have now reported it stolen. They’re asking for the public’s help to get her back. said Darren Van Winckle, one of the owners of the farm. Van Winckle is a dentist by day and farmer by night. He told Global News in an interview Monday that last week, he and his wife went on a short trip to Toronto and left their animals in the charge of a part-time farm hand.

A Quebec resident has been arrested by Ontario Provincial Police and charged in a major construction fraud investigation, according to police. OPP say 11 people have been defrauded of over $1 million. The accused has yet to be named.

Belleville, Ont., police have charged a man with arson following a massive fire in the city. The fire broke out at Thrasher’s Garden Centre on North Front Street Saturday evening. Monday morning, Belleville police said they arrested a 51- year-old man of no fixed address and charged him with arson and two counts of breaching his probation in relation to the fire. Acting deputy fire chief Mark Shannon said the quick actions of local firefighters averted a crisis.

Wastewater surveillance has turned up evidence of the newest Omicron subvariant EG.5 in Kingston, but no official cases have been documented, according to a local expert. The COVID-19 variant found in local wastewater is determined to be more infectious than the subvariants currently circulating, says Stephen Brown, co-director of the Queen’s University wastewater surveillance lab.
