The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that overdose deaths, while still high, are dropping, except in two states, Nevada being one of them. According to the CDC, the only other state that saw a rise in overdose deaths was South Dakota. The CDC reports across the nation, there were an estimated 30,000 fewer overdose deaths last year compared to 2023. Here in Nevada, we saw an increase of a little more than three percent.

The City of Sparks is moving forward with its upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026, with plans to address the deficit the Rail City is facing. The recommendations they discussed included direction for the City of Sparks' final FY26 budget, including possible approval of an increase to the waste management franchise fee, and possible approval of the proposed five-year capital improvement plan.

A retail theft prevention workshop was held today by the Northern Nevada Chapter of the Nevada Organized Retail Crime Association (ORCA) to cover everything from loss prevention to asset protection. The primary topic at the workshop was to build and investigate a case that leads to a successful prosecution. District Attorney Chris Hicks, with Washoe County, says retail theft is no longer an isolated nuisance; it has become a serious problem.

Investigators released the likely cause of the Davis fire nearly eight months after it sparked. They believe the fire started from an improperly extinguished campfire or a warming fire in the area. The fire began in September of 2024 at Davis Creek Regional Park, just south of Reno, burning more than a dozen homes and buildings. The fire has been classified as accidental, and no criminal charges are being pursued.
