The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that overdose deaths, while still high, are dropping, except in two states, Nevada being one of them. According to the CDC, the only other state that saw a rise in overdose deaths was South Dakota. The CDC reports across the nation, there were an estimated 30,000 fewer overdose deaths last year compared to 2023. Here in Nevada, we saw an increase of a little more than three percent.

The City of Reno has brought a new vibe with updated and modernized additions to the downtown Reno Riverwalk. Several featured improvements to the Riverwalk include new lighting throughout the 3-mile loop, additional signage to navigate the area better, 30 pet waste stations, new outdoor furniture to create a cleaner, more modernized look, including added solar light features.

The City of Sparks is moving forward with its upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026, with plans to address the deficit the Rail City is facing. The recommendations they discussed included direction for the City of Sparks' final FY26 budget, including possible approval of an increase to the waste management franchise fee, and possible approval of the proposed five-year capital improvement plan.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam confirmed to county officials that at least 45 people had been detained during ICE operations in Reno and Carson City last week. Washoe County says those arrested are being detained on "ICE Holds". The Nevada Immigration Coalition says ICE is allegedly violating due process rights by not sharing any information as to why people are being arrested. And now protesters are demanding answers from Governor Joe Lombardo and other local authorities.

A lot of people woke up to some surprises today after a long night of heavy wind gusts - fallen fences, missing patio furniture, and no power. NV Energy says over 8,000 people were impacted this morning, mostly in the Douglas and Washoe County areas. Luckily, most outages have been fixed and only a few customers are left to go. Paul Fremeau, meteorologist for NV Energy, says, "Wind is one of the biggest factors that can impact power outages. So, you can have damage to the equipment itself.
