by ALEXANDRA RETTERFrom reading music to playing with vibrato, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) students in orchestra are learning a number of skills. Some said playing a string instrument helped them gain confidence. Students in fifth through 12th grade can take part in orchestra, and Orchestra Director Christian Colburn said students have worked on reading music, producing a good sound from their instrument, playing scales and playing syncopated rhythms. They’ve also worked on improvising.

by ALEXANDRA RETTERVoters in the Cochrane-Fountain City (C-FC) and Arcadia school districts will soon have an opportunity to vote on whether to approve referenda. C-FC is holding a $17.5 million referendum to upgrade facilities, while Arcadia is holding an operating referendum to help cover day-to-day expenses, requesting $1.5 million in the first year, $1 million in the second, $750,000 in the third and $500,000 in the fourth. Election Day is April 1.

by ALEXANDRA RETTERFamily members, friends and community members celebrated the life of Goodview Fire Chief Jason Gruett during a funeral and funeral procession on Thursday. Gruett, 51, died in his home on March 12. He served as chief for seven years and was a firefighter for more than 19. Additionally, he worked at Wabasha Sand and Gravel for 34 years. He was a husband, father of three and grandfather. “Jason had a passion for cars, hockey and his family,” his obituary read.

by ALEXANDRA RETTERLewiston-Altura (L-A) community members approved a $20 million referendum to upgrade school facilities last fall, and the school district is now determining the details of exactly how it will improve some spaces, such as career and technical education (CTE) areas. The district is currently seeking staff feedback and expects to finalize the project plans in the next few months. Staff will provide feedback on the design of areas such as the CTE space.

The center was focused on fostering civic engagement for students, faculty, local governments and nonprofits, according to WSU. The university is now weighing how to move forward, WSU officials said in a statement.

This year, the team has won five tournaments against schools of a similar size and bigger schools. Senior Lily Corcoran and sophomore Lily Doud both compete in categories that involve drawing from a limited number of selections and having a limited amount of time to prepare.

The organization hopes to open the school later this year, and, while some mall businesses had to relocate, several others are expected to stay at the property.
