by ALEXANDRA RETTERFrom reading music to playing with vibrato, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) students in orchestra are learning a number of skills. Some said playing a string instrument helped them gain confidence. Students in fifth through 12th grade can take part in orchestra, and Orchestra Director Christian Colburn said students have worked on reading music, producing a good sound from their instrument, playing scales and playing syncopated rhythms. They’ve also worked on improvising.

by ALEXANDRA RETTERVoters in the Cochrane-Fountain City (C-FC) and Arcadia school districts will soon have an opportunity to vote on whether to approve referenda. C-FC is holding a $17.5 million referendum to upgrade facilities, while Arcadia is holding an operating referendum to help cover day-to-day expenses, requesting $1.5 million in the first year, $1 million in the second, $750,000 in the third and $500,000 in the fourth. Election Day is April 1.

by ALEXANDRA RETTERFamily members, friends and community members celebrated the life of Goodview Fire Chief Jason Gruett during a funeral and funeral procession on Thursday. Gruett, 51, died in his home on March 12. He served as chief for seven years and was a firefighter for more than 19. Additionally, he worked at Wabasha Sand and Gravel for 34 years. He was a husband, father of three and grandfather. “Jason had a passion for cars, hockey and his family,” his obituary read.
