A former NYPD officer was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to causing her husband's death in a Rockland DUI car crash in 2023. New York State Attorney General Letitia James said former NYPD officer Bernadine Thomas, 36, of Maybrook in Orange County, was driving her car northbound on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Haverstraw during the early morning hours of February 26, 2023. She was off-duty, with her husband as a passenger.

A Valley Cottage man was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in prison for sexually abusing a child for almost a year in Clarkstown. Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh II said Mauricio Sicha Torres, 36, of Valley Cottage subjected a 12-year-old girl to sexual abuse in Clarkstown between September 2023 and June 2024. In July 2024, the girl notified a family member of the abuse.

The National Weather Service is predicting a rainy Wednesday and Thursday in the Lower Hudson Valley, but mostly sunny conditions through the last weekend of May. After a sunny but breezy Memorial Day weekend, the sun returns Tuesday, May 27, with a high of 76 degrees. Overnight, clouds are expected to roll in as temperatures drop to around 56 degrees.
