Recent heat extremes, wildfires, and droughts have afflicted multiple regions including parts of South America, the Mediterranean, and Middle East as well as the southwestern United States. These events underscore the vulnerability of societies to ongoing climate change as well as the precarious dependence of societies and ecosystems upon fresh water, the terrestrial lifeblood.
