From Poland to Albania, the forgotten stories of cities once forcefully named offer lessons about resistance, compliance, and the power of place identity. In our family archives, there is a faded black-and-white photograph of my grandfather, taken sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Several others are in the frame too, including a woman, second from the left, who looks uncannily like my mother in her youth, though, of course, it couldn’t possibly be her.

Austria is rightly praised for its high quality of life. It's the product of a generally prosperous society - recent high inflation and a gaping budget deficit notwithstanding - and a strong welfare state. Complementing this are, especially in Vienna, large minority communities, the legacy of a long history of multiculturalism. Austrian life is characterised by abundance. Yet, compared with neighbours such as Italy, that life often seems to lack an essential ingredient: spontaneity.
