The New School’s accreditation status is currently at a non-compliance warning after the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) deemed the university failed to comply with two of the seven commission standards, according to a mandated statement sent by President Joel Towers and Renee T. White, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, on Dec. 2. TNS did not meet the criteria for Standards V and VI.

After 20 years at The New School, Joel Towers stepped into a new role as the 10th president of TNS this semester. President Towers began his time at TNS in 2004 as a full-time faculty member and the first director of sustainable design and urban ecology at Parsons School of Design. Five years later, a nomination from other faculty saw him appointed dean of Parsons. After another nomination from his colleagues officially brought him the title of university president on Aug.

Faculty of The New School organized a solidarity encampment in the University Center today at 2 p.m. The encampment will not end until their demands are met, according to their Instagram. Faculty at the encampment are demanding divestment, an academic boycott of all Israeli institutions, dismissal of disciplinary charges against students, the end of NYPD presence on campus, and agree to hold an election with the New School Student Workers Union (NewSWU).

Non-New School visitors were allowed into the University Center, without being signed in by TNS community members, for an event Wednesday night with Norman Finkelstein, a political scientist, activist, and critic of Israel. The talk was hosted by The May Day Student Organization, the Jewish Culture Club (JCC), and the New School Outdoors Club. Associate Professor, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Departmental Faculty Advisor in the Anthropology department, Abou Farman moderated the event.

Rumors about the university closing the School of Public Engagement have been circulating for roughly two months after multiple emails from the Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Renée T. A petition to open the University Center 24 hours, 7 days a week has gained 500 signatures over the past two weeks, meeting more than half of its goal. Jerome Cheung, a senior in fashion design at Parsons School of Design, started the petition on March 25. In the description section, he expressed concern for his education since he has been unable to use campus space to complete his projects on time, which sometimes require several hours of work and resources he can only access on campus.

“The only way you’re allowed to show a breast online is when it’s sick,” said New School Professor Christen Clifford with a laugh, referring to a picture of her breast on her Instagram feed. Clifford posts her breasts online as a way of communicating her journey through breast cancer; a form of activism and art, she explained. In 2022, Clifford was diagnosed with breast cancer, which would be her third cancer diagnosis within the span of eight years.
