After 20 years at The New School, Joel Towers stepped into a new role as the 10th president of TNS this semester. President Towers began his time at TNS in 2004 as a full-time faculty member and the first director of sustainable design and urban ecology at Parsons School of Design. New School trustees will vote on whether or not to divest from companies supporting Israel, according to a university announcement today. The Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees will make the decision on or before June 14. The vote comes after months of demonstrations on campus calling on the university to divest its endowment from companies arming and supporting Israel.

New School students and faculty in support of Palestine have occupied the Welcome Center and are demanding the Board of Trustees vote to divest from companies supporting Israel. The group is letting people out of the building but allowing no one inside. The demonstrators renamed the building the “Lama Jamous Center,” in honor of Lama Jamous of Gaza. The new encampment is directly across from the University Center, where the faculty Refaat Alareer Solidarity Encampment is located.

A New School student was arrested outside of the University Center after two counter-protesters pepper sprayed multiple protesters today at a rally to support the Faculty Solidarity Encampment. Protesters then sat in front of a New York Police Department car that held the arrested TNS student, leading to the arrest of over eight more people.

The New School does not intend to press charges against students arrested at the Gaza Solidarity Encampments on May 3, university spokesperson Amy Malsin told the New School Free Press. In an email, Malsin confirmed statements from the Executive Deans of TNS that the administration would not pursue criminal charges. The Deans’ statement, which was sent in a university-wide email, also states that the university plans to provide expeditious review of the temporary suspensions issued to students.

Faculty of The New School organized a solidarity encampment in the University Center today at 2 p.m. The encampment will not end until their demands are met, according to their Instagram. Faculty at the encampment are demanding divestment, an academic boycott of all Israeli institutions, dismissal of disciplinary charges against students, the end of NYPD presence on campus, and agree to hold an election with the New School Student Workers Union (NewSWU).
