Dr Alfredo Iacoangeli has been awarded £983,708 funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to explore how genetic sequences acquired millions of years ago from ancient viral infections might influence the risk and progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Around eight per cent of human DNA is made up of genetic sequences acquired from ancient viral infections which date back up to millions of years. These sequences are known as human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs).

Three projects led by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) have received MND Translational Accelerator awards totalling £1.47 million to fund research into Motor Neuron Disease (MND). The projects are part of a £5.8 million investment by the Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to speed up the development of treatments for MND, and the related condition of Frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

Under the heading ‘Disease duration (months)’, all disease durations were reported as ‘disease duration’ rather than reporting the numerical value. The correct version now reports the disease duration in months instead of the original, incorrect ‘disease duration’.
