A film highlighting the absurdity of state repression in Iran will have a short run at the VIFF Centre following last year’s screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Terrestrial Verses includes a series of vignettes showing average Iranians being interrogated by someone off-screen. Each of the accused sits in a chair facing a stationary camera. Iran-based Ali Asgari and Toronto-based Alireza Khatami co-directed the film and provide voices off-screen.

A film highlighting the absurdity of state repression in Iran will have a short run at the VIFF Centre. Terrestrial Verses includes a series of vignettes showing average Iranians being interrogated by someone off-screen. Each of the accused sits in a chair facing a stationary camera. Iran-based Ali Asgari and Toronto-based Alireza Khatami co-directed the film as well as provide voices. It will be shown in Vancouver on May 11, 12, and 16.

The 53rd edition of the largest film festival of the Netherlands drew to a close last night, after an intense film marathon of 11 days. In total, more than 400 films were showcased to an audience. Last year, the audience exceeded 280,000 visits, and there is little doubt that this figure will be exceeded this year (the exact numbers are still being finalised).

Just around 530 km to the southeast of Bali, one of the wealthiest places in Southeast Asia, sits one of the region’s poorer areas: Sumba, Indonesia. QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM ROTTERDAMWhat you see just above is not an error. The picture is a film still. The screen is indeed entirely black throughout almost the entire duration of this 70-minute “film”, except for brief footage of clouds, a tree, a dead woman on the snow, a red curtain and a baby blue screen. And I did not forget to attribute a rating to this film. This is indeed my first zero-splat review ever. Never before did I consider bestowing such dubious honour upon a film.
