QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM CANNESWhe iconic Italian heartthrob Marcello Mastroianni married French super-actress Catherine Deneuve in 1970, it seemed like a match from heaven. The perfect union between two countries with a remarkable cinema tradition .Chiara Mastroianni became the only fruit of the surprisingly short relationship. Mastroianni and Deneuve broke up just four years later, and few people can remember the few movies that they made together then.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM ROTTERDAMWhat you see just above is not an error. The picture is a film still. The screen is indeed entirely black throughout almost the entire duration of this 70-minute “film”, except for brief footage of clouds, a tree, a dead woman on the snow, a red curtain and a baby blue screen. And I did not forget to attribute a rating to this film. This is indeed my first zero-splat review ever. Never before did I consider bestowing such dubious honour upon a film.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM ROTTERDAMIranian men and women are routinely subjected to extortion, corruption, sexism and humiliation. The tactics are often subtle. Terrestrial Verses does not showcase any physical violence. Instead, the tormentors use words in order to manipulate their victims. They are often polite, instrumentalising a deceitful sense of cordiality.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM TALLINNThe execution – a quirky, almost Coen-esque interpretation of Michael Cunningham’s novel The Hours – is brilliant. The casting – which ranges from director Loren Taylor to Flight of The Conchords mainstay Jemaine Clement – is ‘how has this not happened before’ excellent. And the locations are exquisite, portraying New Zealand with quietly beautiful rural tones and backdrops.
