The point of everything we do is to make it look like it has always been there,” says the homeowner when describing her property in Mountain Brook. That mindset took root in 1996 when the house was purchased and restored to its original 1931 elegance. “It had been tinkered with by previous owners and included a mid-century modern addition, which made no sense,” the owner says.

It was really important to us to preserve the integrity of the original house,” says owner Theresa Hickman. “I grew up in Crestline, and a teardown just didn’t feel right to us.” So Theresa and husband Ralfe decided to grow the 971-square-foot shingled cottage into a spacious family home without sacrificing any of its original appeal, thanks to clever additions by architect Eric Dale. “The same family had owned the house since it was built in 1947, and it was in excellent condition” says Ralfe.

“Amanda had a lot of beautiful antiques, but we needed to cull her collection and feature the choice selections in the most favorable light,” says Josh. “I created a furniture plan just like I would in any project, so in that regard, we were starting from scratch.” Josh found places for many of her existing items while presenting new fabrics and upholstery pieces.

Not every decorator in Birmingham could dial into my eclectic, maximalist style, but Danielle Balanis held nothing back,” says Jeana Lee Upton called on Danielle when she hit a decorating dead end. Since the two women had been acquaintances for years, and Jeana Lee was a confessed stalker of the designer’s Instagram, a like-minded collaboration ensued. Designer Cassie Tonsmeire describes her style as traditional with a clean aesthetic. She eschews too much fussiness but does opt for a more feminine spin when decorating her own home. Heirloom pieces include unique, carved dining chairs from her husband Burgett’s grandmother, as well as an antique buffet that was a wedding present from her in-laws.

1Art does not have to be expensive, but it should be a reflection of you and your passions. 2Do not buy art just online; go to art shows and galleries because the texture, flesh, and life of the piece can only be appreciated in person. We have very talented artists right here in Alabama.

Equal attention was paid to each of the smaller parlor-like rooms on the main floor. Although these rooms are connecting spaces, Tami and Krista made sure that each one presents its own special identity with varying palettes and furniture styles, unique lighting, and decorative accents. The clients gave the designers wide latitude when it came to the interiors—they had worked with them on another house, so a level of trust was established.

ARE THERE ANY UNWRITTEN RULES ABOUT COMBINING COLORS OR SIZES TOGETHER, OR IS IT STRICTLY DICTATED BY YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCES? When I arrange dahlias, I follow the rule of “bride, bridesmaid and wedding crasher.” The “bride” is your main focal point, the star of the display. The “bridesmaid” will complement your “bride” in either size, shape, or color. Then your “wedding crasher” is something unexpected or visually different. It can be a vibrant color like red or orange.
