Alison Mau: For the sake of anyone whose career and mental health has been wrecked by workplace misconduct, I hope there are other employers now “reconsidering” their practices around non-disclosure agreements. OPINION: Deep in the latest excellent reporting from journalist Paula Penfold on sexual harassment revelations at accounting firm EY (Ernst & Young), there was a quote from the company’s chief executive Simon O’Connor, that made me stop short.

He persisted, so two years on, I sought some advice from a celebrated writer whom I greatly admired. I even took a one-day writing course with her, where she assured me I’d be absolutely fine. But she had one piece of advice, which I ignored: only do it for a maximum of 18 months. “You’ll struggle to find anything fresh to say after that.”That turned out not to be true (in my opinion).

It really is time to knock the public sale of fireworks on the noggin. I know that’ll make some of you tug at your starched collars, uncomfortable with the idea of yet another “pleasure” taken away. You’re probably the ones who railed against compulsory seat-belts and helmets on bikes.
