    Two men, aged 35 years old and 31 years old, were on Monday released on bail following their latest court hearing into their parts in the violent evictions which occurred in the Larnaca suburb of Oroklini a little over a week ago, with their trial set to begin on May 19. The 35-year-old was the building’s manager and had been arrested on the day of the incident, while the 31-year-old was arrested on Sunday.

    The latest round of talks in Cairo to restore the defunct Gaza ceasefire and free Israeli hostages ended with no apparent breakthrough, Palestinian and Egyptian sources said on Monday. The sources said Hamas had stuck to its position that any agreement must lead to an end to the war in Gaza. Israel, which restarted its military campaign in Gaza last month after a ceasefire agreed in January unravelled, has said it will not end the war until Hamas is stamped out.

    Britain expressed confidence on Monday that it could secure enough raw materials to keep the blast furnaces at its last maker of virgin steel burning, after the government seized operational control from its Chinese owners. Ministers said British Steel’s owners, China’s Jingye Group 600768.SS, had wanted to shut the furnaces at the Scunthorpe plant after they rejected a government funding proposal, which would have forced Britain to import steel instead.

    The Cyprus Hoteliers Association (Pasyxe) on Monday reported a strong increase in hotel bookings during the current period ahead of Easter, reflecting heightened demand across the island. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Pasyxe director general Christos Angelides said there has been “increased activity in hotel bookings in recent weeks due to the coincidence of Orthodox, Catholic and Jewish Easter,” as well as stronger demand expected through to April 25.
