Newfoundlander Katarina Roxon has been named as one of Team Canada’s two flag bearers during the opening of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. This is the medal-winning swimmer’s 5th Paralympic Games. Roxon, of Kippens will join wheelchair athlete Patrick Anderson of Fergus, Ontario as the two official Team Canada flag bearers. Anderson, described as one of the best in wheelchair basketball, is competing in his 6th Paralympic Games.

The RNC is reminding students, parents and families about the importance of online safety as the new school year approaches. Cyberbullying is an ever-present concern, not to mention a number of high-profile criminal cases currently before the courts involving students and young people allegedly being lured online. The RNC advises that tablets or devices be used in common areas of the home and keep devices connected to the internet out of bedrooms and other private spaces.

The Privacy Commissioner’s office has recommended that the City of Corner Brook release some files previously withheld in an access to information request. An ATIPP request was filed with the city regarding information on a series of properties. A “large number” of records were provided, but some were withheld. After being contacted by the complainant, the office has determined that while the city did meet its duty, some of the exceptions claimed by the city could not be supported.

The start of a new school year is just over a week away, and the Teachers Association worries there are still a host of teaching positions that remain unfilled. NLTA President Trent Langdon says they don’t have exact numbers, that would need to come from the district, but they are hearing that as of August 22 there were still about 200 positions that have not been filled.

The provincial government has opened up the application process for its Community Addictions Prevention and Mental Health Promotion Grant Program. Up to $10,000 is available for projects by people, community groups and non-profits that focus on the prevention of addictions and promotion of positive mental health.
