Katarina Roxon Named as Flag Bearer for Opening of Paralympic Games

Newfoundlander Katarina Roxon has been named as one of Team Canada’s two flag bearers during the opening of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. This is the medal-winning swimmer’s 5th Paralympic Games. Roxon, of Kippens will join wheelchair athlete Patrick Anderson of Fergus, Ontario as the two official Team Canada flag bearers. Anderson, described as one of the best in wheelchair basketball, is competing in his 6th Paralympic Games.
RNC Sharing Online Safety Tips for Students and Families as School Year Approaches

The RNC is reminding students, parents and families about the importance of online safety as the new school year approaches. Cyberbullying is an ever-present concern, not to mention a number of high-profile criminal cases currently before the courts involving students and young people allegedly being lured online. The RNC advises that tablets or devices be used in common areas of the home and keep devices connected to the internet out of bedrooms and other private spaces.
Privacy Commissioner Recommends City of Corner Brook Release Withheld Files in ATIPP Review

The Privacy Commissioner’s office has recommended that the City of Corner Brook release some files previously withheld in an access to information request. An ATIPP request was filed with the city regarding information on a series of properties. A “large number” of records were provided, but some were withheld. After being contacted by the complainant, the office has determined that while the city did meet its duty, some of the exceptions claimed by the city could not be supported.
NLTA Concerned About Unfilled Teacher Positions Ahead of New School Year

The start of a new school year is just over a week away, and the Teachers Association worries there are still a host of teaching positions that remain unfilled. NLTA President Trent Langdon says they don’t have exact numbers, that would need to come from the district, but they are hearing that as of August 22 there were still about 200 positions that have not been filled.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has indicated that a federal election will not be happening until next year. Rumors have been swirling about potential election timing for months. Trudeau made the comments while speaking with media yesterday during the cabinet retreat in Halifax. The MHA for Lake Melville this weekend offered an update on measures being taken in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to address public safety concerns. There has been a marked increase in incidents involving violence and disruptive behavior in the town in recent years, culminating in a couple of fires, which prompted a public rally from residents who say they’re afraid to leave their homes. Perry Trimper says residents have also contacted him, offering constructive feedback on how to address the issue.
Province Introducing Pilot Program to Boost School Safety

The Department of Education is piloting a new position that will help with student behavior and safety in some schools this school year. Government says student services teaching and learning assistants will be introduced in six schools throughout the province. The new positions will work with guidance counsellors and instructional resource teachers to support behavioral management skills for students. They will also be responsible for things such as hall monitoring.

Arrested Warrant Issued for Sheshatshiu Woman The RCMP have issued an arrest warrant for a woman in Sheshatshiu. They say 30-year-old Ashley Andrew is wanted on one count of assault, two counts of mischief under $5,000, and six counts of failing to comply with a probation order. Andrew is believed to be located between Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Sheshatshiu.
