    The provincial government is giving $50,000 to the town of Harbour Grace to help them replace a statue of Amelia Earhart. The town was left in shock late last month after the statue of the famed pilot, who went missing while crossing the Pacific in 1937, was stolen. It has not been recovered. Government will give the town $25,000 this year, and another $25,000 next year to help with replacement costs.

    NL Unemployment Rate Drops Below 10 Per Cent for First Time in Nearly a Year For the first time in almost a year, the unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador has dipped below 10 per cent. Nationally, the jobless rate rose from 6.7 per cent in March to 6.9 in April but in NL, it went down to 9.6 from 10.0 per cent.

    A 70-year-old man has been charged after police say he ran a red light, cut off a cop car, and refused to provide a breath sample in Bay Roberts. The incident happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday. As a police cruiser was heading through a green light it was cut off by another vehicle that had run a red light. Officers pulled the driver over, and after a number of failed attempts to provide a breath sample, the man was arrested for refusal.

    A 30-year-old Wabush man is facing a charge of impaired after he was caught speeding through a school zone in Labrador City this morning. The incident happened just before 8:30 when RNC officers noticed a vehicle speeding through a school zone on Bartlett Drive. The man, who has been charged with impaired, was ticketed for speeding in a school zone. His license was suspended and vehicle impounded. The accused has been released to appear in court at a later date.
