Newfoundland and Labrador artists made a strong showing at this year’s East Coast Music Awards, hosted in St. John’s. The final awards were handed out Sunday at Part 2 of the awards shows. Among the local highlights: Heather Feather took home Children’s Artist of the Year, Ana Luísa Ramos won Global Music Release of the Year, and The Order of the Precious Blood earned Loud Release of the Year for their heavy-hitting project Suffer & Die.
Province Gives $50,000 for Replacement of Amelia Earhart Statue in Harbour Grace

The provincial government is giving $50,000 to the town of Harbour Grace to help them replace a statue of Amelia Earhart. The town was left in shock late last month after the statue of the famed pilot, who went missing while crossing the Pacific in 1937, was stolen. It has not been recovered. Government will give the town $25,000 this year, and another $25,000 next year to help with replacement costs.

NL Unemployment Rate Drops Below 10 Per Cent for First Time in Nearly a Year For the first time in almost a year, the unemployment rate in Newfoundland and Labrador has dipped below 10 per cent. Nationally, the jobless rate rose from 6.7 per cent in March to 6.9 in April but in NL, it went down to 9.6 from 10.0 per cent.
Man Charged with Impaired After Running Red Light, Cutting Off Cop Car in Bay Roberts

A 70-year-old man has been charged after police say he ran a red light, cut off a cop car, and refused to provide a breath sample in Bay Roberts. The incident happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday. As a police cruiser was heading through a green light it was cut off by another vehicle that had run a red light. Officers pulled the driver over, and after a number of failed attempts to provide a breath sample, the man was arrested for refusal.
Man Accused of Speeding Through School Zone While Impaired in Labrador City

A 30-year-old Wabush man is facing a charge of impaired after he was caught speeding through a school zone in Labrador City this morning. The incident happened just before 8:30 when RNC officers noticed a vehicle speeding through a school zone on Bartlett Drive. The man, who has been charged with impaired, was ticketed for speeding in a school zone. His license was suspended and vehicle impounded. The accused has been released to appear in court at a later date.
RCMP Investigating After Packages Stolen From Canada Post in Port Blandford

The RCMP are investigating after a number of packages were stolen from a Canada Post office in Port Blandford. The break-in happened sometime overnight between April 25th and 26th with a number of packages being taken. In addition to a smashed window, there were other forms of damage to the inside of the building. RCMP are asking residents to check any surveillance footage for suspicious activity around the time of the crime. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

All residents are permitted to return to their properties via established checkpoints. The provincial government is asking people to exercise caution when returning, and to follow guidance provided by local emergency responders. Route 70 through Adam’s Cove will remain closed for non-residents.

Two people have been arrested and charged following an incident in downtown St. John’s late last week that resulted in a shelter-in-place order. The RNC were called to Cookstown Road shortly before 1:30 p.m. last Thursday after they received a number of calls describing a fight outside involving a group of people who fled to a nearby home before police arrived.
44-Year-Old Man Charged After Assault Involving Children in St. John’s

A 44-year-old man is facing several charges after an assault involving children in St. John’s. RNC officers responded to a home in the west end of the city just before 8:30 p.m. Friday. Two children were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The man has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, three counts of assault, and choking. Police say all parties were known to each other and there is no risk to public safety, and the investigation is still ongoing. He was held for court.

The duo will share the stage for an night of hits and storytelling, part of a 34-date cross-country run that kicks off October 17. The group was here last year in an event that quickly became a fan-favourite from attendees. The event takes place October 20-21st at Holy Heart Theatre.
