Editors’ note: Berkeley High senior Maya Merhige swam across the 20.5-mile English Channel on Saturday in 11 hours, 39 minutes — making her one of the youngest swimmers to ever complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, which also includes crossing the 20-mile Catalina Channel and swimming 28.5 miles around Manhattan. Berkeleyside is resharing this profile of Merhige, first published last September.

The state and national parks reservations websites are so popular that you often have to make reservations six months in advance, or more for holiday weekends or popular destinations.
