"I feel like I found a purpose for all of my struggle and everything and that's to hopefully help people and make some change," MacKenzie Wood said. Wood is one of ten young adults part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness's Next Gen Youth Advisory Group. Those ten individuals were selected to serve a one year term and create a podcast on various mental health topics.

"The number of psychiatric beds has dropped," said Dr. Robin Tassinari of Albany Medical Center. "It's hard to get outpatient referrals for lots of reasons, insurance coverage, not as many providers. Funding has been a problem, there's no question. Mental health services funding takes up less than 3% of the national health budget." The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, has made it it's mission to advocate, educate and raise awareness.

Mental illnesses like schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc. can be very difficult on all members of a family, leading to increased tension and stress. Navigating the mental health system can further complicate matters with many barriers preventing easy treatment for patients.

Her loved one has been sick for ten years, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

A winter storm is on the horizon, beginning later Monday evening and winding down later in the day Tuesday. Expect morning sun to fade behind increasing clouds and then snow to break out from southwest to northeast between 7pm and 11pm. Snow should begin in the Capital Region around 9pm-10pm. Steady, accumulating snow will fall overnight with roads becoming snow covered and very slippery. Snowfall rates may be around 1" per hour at times.
