OVIEDO, SpainUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Spain to boost defense spending during tariff talks with his Spanish counterpart in Washington, according to a statement released late Tuesday. Bessent met with Spanish Trade Minister Carlos Cuerpo, who expressed optimism that the US is open to “fair” negotiations on tariffs. “We spoke of defense spending in terms of NATO and the EU,” Cuerpo told reporters after their Tuesday meeting.

OVIEDO, Spain Spain’s Supreme Court confirmed on Thursday it will deny amnesty to Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont. While the Spanish government passed a controversial amnesty law in 2024 that was expected to pave the way for Puigdemont’s return from exile, the court ruled he cannot be pardoned due to embezzlement charges. Puigdemont, the former president of the Spanish region of Catalonia, fled Spain in 2017 after a failed push for independence.

OVIEDO, Spain Gaza is experiencing an “unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe,” Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Monday. “There are continuous attacks causing thousands of civilian casualties and displacements. No humanitarian aid has entered for a month. It is unbearable,” he wrote on the social media platform Bluesky. Albares said Spain will continue working for peace, including efforts toward a permanent ceasefire and securing basic respect for hospitals, schools and homes.

Pessimism is widespread, with more than half saying they believe the world will become more violent, authoritarian and unequal within the next five years, according to a survey conducted by polling firm 40db for the El Pais newspaper and Cadena Ser radio station. Just around one in 10 expect a more prosperous and stable future.
